Comprehensible Input
Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how the Comprehensible Input YouTube Chrome extension and related web services collect, use, store, and protect information.
Last updated: July 2, 20261. What the extension does
Comprehensible Input helps users work with YouTube videos by loading available transcript/caption text, following the current playback position, creating timestamped clips, looping difficult sections, saving notes, exporting learning notes, and searching previously saved clip history.
2. Information we collect
We collect only the information needed to provide the extension's user-facing features.
- Account information: email address, password authentication data, verification codes, session tokens, membership status, plan limits, and usage counts. Passwords are stored as hashes, not as plain text.
- YouTube video information: video URL, video ID, video title, channel name, channel URL, transcript/caption track metadata, and transcript text needed to display subtitles and create clips.
- User-created content: clip start and end timestamps, selected clip transcript text, playback speed/loop choices, notes, saved clip history, and generated note exports.
- Local extension data: authentication token, panel preferences, draft clips, UI state, and unsaved clip data may be stored in Chrome local storage on your device.
- Payment and membership information: selected plan, order status, checkout session identifiers, and payment status. Full payment card details are handled by the payment provider and are not stored by us.
- Technical and security information: request time, IP address, browser user agent, error logs, rate-limit information, and similar operational data needed to secure, debug, and operate the service.
3. How we use information
- Load and display YouTube transcript/caption text for the video you are watching.
- Create, preview, loop, save, delete, and rematch timestamped clips.
- Save notes and clip history to your signed-in account when you choose to save them.
- Provide fuzzy search over saved video history, including video title and channel name.
- Generate, copy, or download notes exports.
- Authenticate your account, keep you signed in, and manage membership limits.
- Process membership purchases, prevent abuse, debug issues, and keep the service reliable.
4. Chrome extension data handling
The extension runs on YouTube pages and uses Chrome extension APIs only to provide the visible extension features. External requests made by the extension are routed through the background service worker. The extension does not collect general browsing history, does not monitor non-YouTube pages, and does not use page content for advertising or profiling.
5. Sharing and third-party services
We do not sell personal information. We do not use user data for personalized ads.
We may share limited information with service providers only when necessary to operate the product:
- YouTube/Google: to request caption/transcript resources for the video you are watching.
- Payment providers: to process membership checkout and payment status.
- Email providers: to send verification, sign-up, password reset, and account-related messages.
- Hosting, database, logging, and security providers: to operate, protect, monitor, and troubleshoot the backend service.
We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect users and the service, or as part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.
6. Chrome Web Store Limited Use disclosure
Our use and transfer of information received from Chrome extension APIs and YouTube page content is limited to providing and improving the extension's single purpose and user-facing features. We do not use or transfer this information for advertising, retargeting, interest-based advertising, creditworthiness, lending, or unrelated profiling. Humans do not read user content unless you ask for support, we need to address abuse or security issues, we are required by law, or the data has been aggregated and anonymized for internal operations.
7. Data retention and deletion
- Saved clips, notes, and history remain in your account until you delete them or request deletion.
- Local draft clips and preferences may remain in Chrome local storage until cleared by you, the browser, or extension removal.
- Session tokens remain until logout, expiration, or account/session cleanup.
- Operational logs are retained only as long as reasonably needed for security, debugging, reliability, and legal obligations.
You can delete individual saved clips from the extension. To request account deletion or deletion of account-level data, contact us at xiaohui.chi.ca@gmail.com.
8. Security
We use HTTPS for network requests to our backend service and payment provider. We use authentication tokens for signed-in requests, store passwords as hashes, and limit access to production data to what is needed to operate and secure the service. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect user data using reasonable technical and organizational safeguards.
9. Your choices
- You can use transcript loading without saving clips to an account.
- You can choose whether to sign in and save clips or notes to the backend service.
- You can delete clips from the extension.
- You can sign out to remove the stored authentication token from the extension.
- You can remove the extension or clear Chrome extension storage to remove local extension data.
10. Children's privacy
The service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us so we can take appropriate action.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date and, when appropriate, provide additional notice.
